Italian gelato flavors are just as exciting as ice cream. You will find something to excite your palate with intense flavors with the added bargain of being far less fat than ice cream. Here is just a sampling of what you will find in the wonderful world of Italian gelato.

Intense Citrus
One of the most traditional and delicious gelato flavors is Limone or Lemon. This sorbet style gelato is invigorating and intense with the flavor of fresh lemon as the star. Tangy, cool and sweet lemon gelato has been served for centuries. Blood orange is another favorite with a rich, beautiful color that is far more intense than the basic flavor of Florida oranges. Authentic “Arancia rossa” are grown in Sicily and is a true Italian flavor that must be tasted to truly appreciate the difference. More modern flavors include key lime and citrus tropicale.

Chocolate
Another classic, chocolate gelato is far more intense in flavor than what most people are used to in ice cream. Chocolate gelato is smooth and velvety and the milk base of the gelato allows the chocolate to be front and center in taste. A classic combination is chocolate hazelnut; a popular Italian pairing that is even richer than basic ice cream.

Vanilla
Vanilla is not basic when it comes to gelato. Vanilla comes in a number of versions based on the place the vanilla is sourced from Tahiti to Madagascar as well as Mexico. You will find a vanilla that is best suited to your palate. Vanilla is often paired with other flavors such as fruit.

Classic Fruit and Nut
There are many classic fruit flavors of gelato such as strawberry, banana, mixed berries and apricot. These fruity delights come in both gelato and sorbetto or sorbets. They are very refreshing and are wonderfully colorful as well. Pistachio is a traditional nut used in gelato as is hazelnut. You will also find toasted almond as well as tropical flavors such as coconut.

New and Exciting
There are many new and exciting flavors from cinnamon to exotic fruits such as mango, pomegranate and pineapple. Interesting combinations such as chocolate and chillies, lemon and basil and even milk chocolate with whiskey keep gelato lovers coming back for more.
