Let me narrate a short story that was told to me. A business owner appoints a sales manager and asks him to promote his product.
The sales manager goes to the field and returns empty handed at the end of the day. As the business owner asked him about how much he could sale, he answerd, “Our product quality is not great and it is priced more. How do you expect me to sale?”
The business owner replied, “If my product quality is good and it is priced low, why do I need you?”
This is the same question I put to aspiring requirements analysts. Requirements need to be provided by Domain SMEs and if they will also do the elaboration, what is the need for requirements analysts?
As requirements analysts, we need to elaborate and build upon sketchy details provided by stakeholders and that is what developers need to build the system.
This is where the real work and intelligence of requirements analysts lie. You can refer to a comprehensive SRS template that I developed for the same purpose.
