Tired of seeing those dark spots on your marble floor? Maybe it’s time to start on your marble floor polishing efforts again. As for supplies, there are a lot of marble polish products available for purchase on the market. Just looking through the shelves at the nearest Walmart will give you an idea of how many options are out there. However, not all of those products are good for your floors. Some of them are bad news. So what do you do? Here are a few pointers from DoItYourself to help you figure out which cleaners are safe to use:

  • Say no to acidic cleaners. Marble belongs to the limestone family. It’s made up of calcium carbonate. That’s why it’s essential that you keep any cleaner that contains acids, along with acidic substances found in lemon or lime juice or vinegar, away from your marble floors. Acid destroys marble and could deal extensive damage to the material. There’s still hope if you want a gleaming marble floor, however. An easy solution for this is to:

  • Mix your own cleaner. It’s easy enough to make and safe for your floors, which makes it ideal for marble floor polishing. One of the most common recipes you can follow out there requires nothing more than baking soda and warm water. Mix 3 tablespoons of the baking soda into a quart of water and you’ve got a cleaning solution you can use! To apply, just wet a rag, wring it to eliminate the excess water and scrub your floors clean. Then, let the surface dry out completely before you scrub it down with warm water. As for wiping the excess water away, use a chamois.

  • Steer clear of abrasive cleaners and polishing solutions. Now that you know how to clean your marble floors, learn how to polish them to a shine as well. Take a piece of chalk, crush it and dip a cloth into the powder. Scrub your floors with it. Makes sure your strokes overlap. Again, wait until the surface is dry. Check the results.

  • Deal with spills quickly. Wipe up any stains as soon as they happen. Sponge, warm water, and a drop of detergent works great for removing sugar. When you’re dealing with oil and tomato, though—often greasy and hard to get off your hands—you’ll need warm soapy water along with a sponge and a bit of hydrogen peroxide. Scrub, dry then rinse and polish it off with a chamois.

And if you don’t want to risk damaging your floors or you simply don’t have the time to do the work yourself, it’s easy enough to call in the services of a professional marble floor polishing service to take care of things for you.
