If you own a home with a yard, chances are, you make these mistakes. Lawn maintenance in Houston should be straightforward to most people, but sometimes, you have no idea that what you’re doing could cause harm. However, simple things you do, such as watering and not picking up yard toys could be problematic.

Watering Too Frequently

The Houston area is notorious for water restrictions in the late spring and summer. Because of this, many people over-water their grass when there aren’t any restrictions in the hope that the yard will hold the water until it’s necessary later on. However, grass isn’t like a camel, and if you overwater, the grass may not grow as deeply. The problem with this is that it won’t survive as long through the drought. Another problem is that pests, disease, and mold could form if you continuously water too much.

Weed Pulling

While pulling weeds is important to keep your yard looking nice and beautiful, you shouldn’t pull weeds by hand. Because some weeds grow seeds underground that lie dormant until disturbed, you could risk them germinating when you pull the weed you see. Instead, it is usually better to purchase weed killer and use it as directed.

Another problem with weed pulling by hand is that you typically don’t get to the root of the weed and just pull off what you see. The root hairs are still embedded into the ground, allowing it to grow back in a matter of weeks.

Fertilization

It is typically a good idea not to seed the yard during drought season because the seeds could burn or just not grow. However, just because you shouldn’t seed during a drought doesn’t mean you shouldn’t fertilize. In many cases, lawns go dormant or turn brown because there isn’t enough water, but the roots are still alive and active. Adding fertilizer will help your grass be ready to grow again when it rains.

Lawn Objects

Do you love gnomes or have a trampoline? Most people enjoy decorating their yard with ornaments, but it can be damaging to the soil and the grass. In most cases, it can kill the grass if you don’t move the objects around regularly. Even moving them right beside where they were is okay, if you continue moving them frequently, so all the yard has time to breathe.

Lawn maintenance in Houston can be simple if you don’t make these four mistakes and mow correctly. Go to We Only Cut Grass to read their blog for other helpful tips or to contact them for a quote.
