To begin your herb garden, you should have an available sunny window which receives at least 5 hours of sunlight a day. Many herbs hail from Mediterranean areas and require the light to thrive. Keep the house between 60 degrees to 70 degrees to create the perfect conditions for growing.
While you may start the herbs from seed, it is simpler to purchase starter plants from your area farmers market or nursery. There are many kinds of containers to use for your plants, but terracotta planters are more popular. Be certain the pots contain drainage holes at the bottom so the herbs do not rot. Keep a saucer or another similarly-shaped item beneath to catch the excessive water when it runs through. Whatever container you choose ought to be deep enough to promote the correct root development, ideally from 6” to 12” deep. It’s possible to plant several herbs in a single container or choose individual 6” pots for every plant.
Be cautious as you select the kind of soil for the herbs, as plants are prone to soil-borne diseases. It is an excellent idea to go with store-bought potting mixes. The area gardening center may assist you in selecting the proper one for your needs. Make certain the mixture is lightweight and drains well. Pour a 2”–3” layer of potting soil in the bottom of the container and put the plant gently inside the container.
As the seeds sprout, transplant the whole peat pot into a larger planter. Put the pots into a sunny area or beneath a grow light if your house does not get enough sunlight. Space the herbs out so they do not crowd one another and avoid placing the plants close to a heating vent in order to avoid extreme fluctuations in temperature.
