Many problems can arise in Commack that only a trained orthodontist can help with. If you have braces, you will probably experience one of these problems or emergencies as they are fairly common. They can include loose brackets, wires out of the back brace, poking wires, sore teeth or poking elastic hooks.
Loose Brackets
Brackets are glued together and formed with wire, as well. Sometimes, the glued bracket becomes loose. This can be easy to fix, but it is best if you can remove the loosened bracket and put it in an envelope or plastic baggie until you can arrange for a visit to the orthodontist in Commack. However, in some cases, the bracket won’t come out easily, so more care will be needed.
Wires out of the Back Brace
Whenever sticky or very hard foods are eaten, they can bend the wires and cause them to come out of the back of the brace. When this happens, tweezers or needle-nose pliers can be used to set the wire back, but if this isn’t possible, you may have to cut the wire to ease pain until you can get back to the orthodontist to have the wire replaced.
Poking Wires
If you have wires poking your cheek or gums, it will be important to get to the dentist’s office quickly to have it taken care of. In the meantime, you can cut the wire that is poking you or turn down the wire so that it is no longer a poking threat. This is not a permanent fix, but will help until you get to the orthodontist’s office.
Sore Teeth
Many patients feel some pain or soreness after the braces have been placed, and anytime adjustments must be made. It is typically normal and will usually go away after one to three days. Eating softer foods, taking pain relievers and chewing with the sore teeth can all help to ease the pain.
Poking Elastic Hooks
Some braces have small hooks that will help you wrap elastic around the brace. This is a common form of braces, but the hooks can sometimes irritate the cheek and lips. You can push the hook in closer to the brace or put a small ball of wax onto the hook so the area is smoother. You will probably still need to go to back to the orthodontist to have the situation fixed permanently.
