So, you see that Turbo 500 still for sale and as fast as physics will allow, you whip out the plastic and place the order. There’s just one problem – do you know how to brew safely and legally? Here are some tips to stay on the right side of Uncle Sam and out of harm’s way.
1. Federal law as regards home distilleries is pretty much a case of NO/UNLESS. The big obstacle of going legal is getting that federal permit.
2. Don’t forget state laws where you’re brewing.
3. This is a controlled alcohol still explosion. Don’t do that.
4. Do not allow your still to run unattended.
5. Do not distill in an unventilated space.
6. Make sure that your still is made from food grade copper or stainless steel with lead free welds. Other materials can leach toxins into your brew.
7. Alcohol vapor is flammable and if the product is pure enough, the fire can even be invisible. Check your still for leaks and drips, and only dispense your product into a glass vessel.
8. No sparks, no smoking, and no open flames anywhere near the still and keep a fire extinguisher handy.
9. Control and monitor your heat source.
10. Protective gear, because steam burns hurt and can be severe. At minimum, wear a face shield and gloves.
Home distilling is great for making liquors and spirits, and even extracting essential oils, but you should know how to distill safely. One mistake in cutting the batch, one still in bad repair, and the good times could come to an end. It should also go without saying; never sell your distilled product without having a permit. Every hobby community has its bad apples and goofuses, but do yourself and your loved ones a favor and don’t be that guy.
