For those who want to become a doctor, it requires dedication, hard work and many years of studying. Following residency in Orlando, licensing may occur. Many become specialists and then, following extensive training and further study and exams, become board-certified doctors.

What Is a Board-Certified Doctor?

Board-certified doctors in Orlando are those who have expanded beyond the general knowledge of a doctor into a specific area of learning. They have then proceeded to clearly demonstrate their knowledge and expertise to a board that specializes in their chosen field of specialization. The Board “certifies” them, giving them the highest level of accreditation within the specialty they have elected to pursue further.

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is one board that establishes the standards for doctor certification. It consists of 24 other boards – each focusing on some specialty and/or sub-specialty. In addition, certification may be obtained from one of two other major boards:

1. The American Osteopathic Association
2. The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS)
3. The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM),

Each of these boards has requirements a doctor must meet before being granted certification. These go beyond education and may include attestations. Boards may also require the certified doctor to become recertified after a certain period. This is called  Maintenance of Certification  (MOC) by the ABMS.

Why Board-Certified Doctors?

Board certification is one more layer providing protection to patients. It is a form of guarantee. It lets patients in Orlando know the doctors are well-qualified to perform in a field where specialization is required.
