When you own a home, you are eventually going to have to invest in replacement windows. However, this doesn’t have to be a guessing game. There are a few tell-tale signs of a problem that will indicate it is time to purchase new windows.

The Windows Don’t Open or Close Properly

If you try to open your windows to let some fresh air in only to discover that they don’t open, it may be the result in a foundation shift, deterioration of the window frame or heat warp. Any of these issues can increase your energy costs and make using your windows virtually impossible.

There’s Fog Between the Glass Panes

If moisture gets into the window it can settle in the middle of the panes and create an extremely frustrating fog. This indicates a broken seal. You will either need to replace the seal or the entire window sometime soon.

Faded Drapes, Carpet or Upholstery

Another sign that you may need to invest in replacement windows is if you have noticed your drapes, carpet or upholstery near the glass looks faded. If this happens, you likely don’t have windows with low E glass. This type of glass will block the UV sun rays and prevent fading.

Higher than Usual Energy Costs

If you notice that your energy costs are suddenly going up, the culprit may be windows that aren’t efficient. The only way to fix this issue is by investing in replacement windows sooner, rather than later.

There is no question that a home’s windows are a large investment. If they need to be replaced, you likely want to be sure before spending this much money. If you have noticed any or all of the signs here, then it is definitely time to replace your windows.
